Sources of Ukrainian vocabulary of the first half of the XIX century – first of all, the Russian-Ukrainian dictionaries by P. Biletsky-Nosenko, M. Zakrevsky – confirm the inseparable connection of the lexicography of this period with the works of I. Kotlyarevsky. The relatively small Ukrainian-Russian glossary (about 1,000 words), compiled by J. Kamenetsky for “Eneida”, has features characteristic for a contrasting dictionary with the elements of ethnolinguistic and etymological dictionaries. This work intensified the language consciousness of dictionary enthusiasts – O. Pavlovsky, I. Vojcechovych and others – and in fact served as a catalyst for the truly great cultural movement that, in the conditions of statelessness of the Ukrainian people, rose to the creation of fundamental lexicographical works – translated dictionaries by E. Zhelekhivsky and S. Nedilsky (1886), M. Umanets (Komarov) and A. Spilka (1893–1898), B. Hrinchenko (1907–1909).
