dc.description.abstract | This article deals with lexical and semantic lacunas which can occur while rendering an English text into the Ukrainian language. The authors have attempted to find the main methods of eliminating lexical and semantic lacunas in the target texts. The essence of the phenomenon of lexical and semantic lacunarity has been clarified in this scientific research. In particular, the emergence of lexical and semantic lacunae is stated to be caused by the uniqueness of the language pictures of the world of English and Ukrainian speakers and the diversity of their cultures. In the article the authors have made a distinction between the concepts of “lexical and semantic lacunae” and “culturally marked lacunae” and explained the differences between these two concepts. A lexical and semantic lacuna arises in the case of the absence of a Ukrainian equivalent for a certain English lexical item and the existence of the concept of the English word in the target language, whereas culturally marked lacunae are caused by the absence of the concept as well as the lexical item in the target language. The ways of translating English lexical items which Ukrainian equivalents did not acquire the form of a word or a phraseological unit are studied in the article. The scientific research also deals with methods of rendering some meanings of polysemous words which have no equivalents in the target language. The authors have investigated the essence of the phenomenon of generic and specific lacunarity and analyzed the causes of its emergence. They also described the methods of delacunization (i.e. elimimation) of generic and specific lacunas in the target text. In particular, the emergence of generic and specific lacunae is stated to be caused by different requirements of the sourse and target languages to convey certain semantic information in a word. If the details of a certain general concept were essential for English speakers contrary to Ukrainian ones, there formed several words in English denoting specific concepts of a general notion. Thus, specific lacunae emerged. If the details of a certain notion were not essential for English speakers contrary to Ukrainian ones, there formed only one word denoting general notion of a certain concept in the English language. Thus, generic lacunae emerged. Thus, having analyzed common theoretical views upon the methods of translating lacunar lexical items and the data collected from original and translated texts of English literary works and Internet sources the authors draw a conclusion that the main ways of eliminating lacunarity in the EnglishUkrainian translation are the descriptive method; method of transcription or transliteration. Meaning of lexical and semantic lacunas can also be rendered by means of using semantic analogies. Specific and generic lacunae can be omitted in a target text not to violate linguistic norms of the target language. The authors of the article emphasize that the way of delacunization of lexical and semantic lacunar lexical items is chosen by the tra | uk_UA |
